Day 33 – Early Morning
The Well of Demons: The Hall of Mirrors
After talking to the spectral figures the party decides to follow the trail of blood which leads towards the west. It only goes a short distance before heading into a small room which is filled with the shattered pieces of what may be one, or possibly two, gnolls. It is hard to tell exactly what happened as there is no part of the creature left larger than a man’s finger – it is almost as if the thing has been shredded by a set of massive blades.
Heading through a door to the north a set of curtains is found blocking view of the room beyond. Upon drawing one of the curtains with his spectral hand, Sneezy discovers a large chamber which is mostly bare except for several ornate pillars. Each of the pillars faces is covered with a mirrored surface and the seams are bronze which has been carved into the shape of small clawing demons. Some of the mirrored pillars are dark and seem to absorb light, while others are bright and seem to glow from within, emitting a faint blue radiance.
With the curtains drawn Cymbalta spies a skeletal figure at the far end of the room and lets an arrow fly at the being. The dwarves seem confused by his behaviour as they cannot see the creature, but Happy trusts his friend enough to give chase and both he and Haggis enter the room with Bashful closely following. Disaster then strikes as Bashful brushes one of the darkened mirrors and is, seemingly, instantly vaporised. Stunned by the loss of his small friend Cymbalta rushes forward to discover what fiend may have perpetrated this evil deed only to bear witness as Haggis is also blasted from existence. “The mirrors are traps” shouts Sneezy, “Do not touch them for they will steal both your body and your soul”.
Thus warned the group begins to give the mirrors a wide berth, but it helped little for the dreaded things still reached out and grasped at them. Cymbala is picked up by one of the bright mirrors and cast over to the other side of the room to be attacked by the skeletal beings, while Happy is attacked by a dark mirror and either sent away or disintegrated as the others had been.
Believing that the secret to stopping the mirrors may lie beyond the curtains at the room’s end, Cymbalta brushes aside the skeletons and rushes into the alcove. There he spies a strange mask, one of the items the ghosts had said were needed to summon the dragon, so he grasped it and made to escape back into the safety of the southern corridor.
Meanwhile Bashful, Haggis and Happy do battle royal in an enclosed chamber with a pair of gnolls. They had not been killed, but instead had been transported to a secret room with no means of escape. Some of the gnoll raiding party must have suffered the same fate and been trapped there previously, but in their weakened state they were no match for three battle hardened dwarf warriors and were quickly dispatched.
Just as he was about to elude the skeletons and make it to safety Cymbalta is attacked by a dark mirror and thrust into the secret chamber with the dwarven warriors. With all of the gnolls dead the four friends set about searching the chamber for a way out but it was fruitless as neither door nor passage could be found, however a couple of useful magic items were discovered on the bodies of the ill-fated gnolls. With the four hopelessly trapped it is now up to those left outside to discover a means of disabling the mirrors and reuniting the party.
Sneezy realised that Cymbalta had been on the right path by searching the room’s alcove, however the mask was obviously not the answer to negating the trap’s menace. Bravely he steps forward and allows himself to be taken by the light mirror and transported to the alcove. Once there he blasts his way past the skeletal minions and made careful search of the alter which sat in the alcove. Spying a hand-shaped depression in the alter Sneezy says a quick prayer to Corellon and thrusts his hand into the imprint. His instincts prove true and the four trapped warriors soon found themselves transported back into the mirror chamber.
Realising that the only way to prevent being trapped again was to block their sight of the mirrors, the party rushes outside the room throwing the thick curtains closed behind them. The first key to the ritual had been found and the party was once again whole.
