Day 33 – Midmorning
The Well of Demons: Blood River Room
Heading back into the main section of the complex the party decides to brave the Blood River room and attempt to retrieve the blade and hilt from the room’s far side. The room is split by two large channels filled with what appears to be blood and two giant Minotaur statues stand guard over the rivers, obviously some form of trap. Here it is that the Tieflings reveal their true nature. Imperiously the one named Asterik orders the party to enter the room and run the gauntlet of traps so that he and his brother Katal can claim the magic items unharmed.
“There are more of you than us, so thus you have more who are expendable”.
Naturally we tell him to eat our chainmail codpieces which prompts the two craven and traitorous devilkin to vanish from sight. Resolving to rid ourselves of the jackals when next they appear, we keep a wary eye out while making progress into the chamber.
On entering the room nothing appears to happen, but as we scan for danger we notice several dark shapes moving underneath the blood. One of them rises up briefly to the surface and a dark red pair of eyes looks at us menacingly from a fierce demonic face before the creature again slides beneath the hideous liquid.
Deciding that the best way across would be to string a rope between the two statues Bashful and Cymbalta jump across to the closest Minotaur. While there they notice a panel of some sort on the statue’s waistline and decide to investigate to determine if the trap can be disabled. Prying open the panel reveals a set of wires and gears – the inner workings of the trap mechanism. Carefully Cymbalta attempts to disengage the wires but a slipped hand only results in the trap engaging and the mechanism fusing in the on position. Like a giant whirling top the mid-section of the statue begins to rotate which causes a long barbed chain, held in the statue’s hand, to swing about the room slashing at all those standing at the doorway.
With the trap broken Bashful and Cymbalta return to their original plan while the rest of the party waits outside the room to avoid the deadly whip. Fortunately the whip cannot hurt anyone already standing on the statue’s pedestal and the pauses between its rotations are long enough to enable Bashful to climb onto the statue’s shoulders. Once there he secures one end of the rope to the head of the east statue while Cymbalta nimbly manoeuvres across the rivers and secures the other end of the rope to the west statue. Just as this is complete one of the blood demons claws its way out of the river and moves to attack Bashful. He braces himself against the statue’s head and thrusts downwards with his halberd piercing the creature and forcing it back towards the river. Seeing his brother in trouble Sneezy bravely leaps over the gap to the statue and fires magic bolts into the demon to further weaken its hold on the platform while Snow blasts it with a crescendo of sound throwing it back into the murky liquid as all the while the statue whirls its fearsome whip about the room.
Deciding that it would be best to destroy the trap entirely Bashful and Sneezy begin to smash away at the torso to prevent the mechanism from engaging, while Cymbalta provides overwatch to pierce the demons with a deadly arrow should one reappear. At the doorway another of the creatures clambers up onto the platform with Snow, Happy and Haggis and attempts to claw them with its sharp talons. Cymbalta transfixes the beast with an arrow preventing it from moving off the steps allowing Happy, Haggis and Snow to dispatch it swiftly.
Bashful and Sneezy finish their task on the first statue and its upper section topples onto the platform preventing the whip from rotating. They notice that small pieces of the statue slowly begin to reform as if it has some sort of self-repair function but determine that it will take a long time before the trap is again a danger. Deciding to move across the first river Bashful uses the rope to clamber to the central platform and begins looking for a way to get to the blade and hilt. As he surveys the room several more of the creatures rise from the blood river and move to surround him. Cymbalta and Sneezy engage the demons with fire and bow but only manage to wound a couple of them before they reach Bashful. Sneezy notices that after an initially successful fire attack, any subsequent attack upon the same demon seems to have less effect as though they can manipulate their bodies to resist his attacks at will.
Bashful is deeply wounded and surrounded by demons but bravely fights on while Happy’s hammer, Cymbalta’s arrows, Sneezy’s firebolts and Snow’s loud cries try to cut down his many foes. Just as all seems lost Robb catches up with the party and lets fly one of his deadly darts. Emboldened by his success Snow use one of her cries to yank Bashful from his precarious position and throw him bodily into the river of blood. While this causes him some pain it is nowhere near as harmful as the attacks of four enraged demons.
With Bashful almost safe Cymbalta begins to destroy the second Minotaur statue while the others deal with the last of the demons. Robb’s timely appearance has given the whole party hope and soon the demons are overcome and the statue trap destroyed. After catching their breath the two pieces of the dagger are retrieved and placed together to form both a weapon and an instrument of the ritual.
