Day 39 – Late Evening
The Tower of Mysteries: Shrine to Vecna
We step through the teleport and find ourselves in a small room with three doors leading west, north and east. A quick check by Robb reveals the west door to be magically locked while he can hear chanting coming from beyond the north door. Hoping to sneak about and catch Paldemar unawares we decide to go through the east door, however opening it leads only to combat as it is guarded on the other side by another bronze warden.
Happy and Bashful move to block the east door and engage the warder while the door to the north opens to reveal Paldemar and his Norker minions. Paldemar throws a lightning storm into the room along with a pre-emptive gloat about his supposed revenge for our meddling with his plans for world domination. Unfortunately without a white cat to stroke and a mini version of himself he does not carry anywhere near the menace he claims so his threats do nothing to stall our advance.
Cymbalta pins Paldemar to the floor with a well-placed shot while Snow’s charms cause the bronze warder to pause and look upon Happy in a friendly manner (fortunately for Happy, not too friendly). Robb leaps into the room with the warder and moves to open its northern door hoping to come around and flank Paldemar from the other side. On entering the shrine he finds several more Norkers and an Enigma of Vecna so he reaches into his bag of tricks and extracts a sachet of Id Moss Powder hoping to turn the Enigma to our side. Moving in for a shot Robb gets hit by a bright beam of light which blasts out from the altar.
“It’s a skull with frikken laser beams attached to its head”
yells Robb as he retreats to relative safety. He then throws his deadly powder at the Enigma and scores a solid hit but unfortunately his cunning plan is undone when Sneezy blankets the area in a Stinking Cloud preventing the Enigma from seeing any of its allies.
Paldemar frees himself and races to the west to get out of the cloud which is proving as much hindrance as help since neither side can see the other. Eventually Sneezy is convinced, after much prodding, to move the cloud away from the door so that we can chase after Paldemar. Entering the room Bashful, Doc and Cymbalta are attacked by a force emanating from a small statue of Vecna which dazes them and slows their advance. However even in their weakened state they are able to run down Paldemar and trap him in his chambers. With spell, blade and arrow they attack the evil mage and have brought him to the edge of death when he bolts for the door and tries to escape via the teleport.
Meanwhile Happy continues to defend against the warder while Snow blasts it with her vocal powers. Their battle rages long as the warder is thrown about the room slowly being worn down. Sneezy adds to the damage by moving his cloud into the eastern chamber; while it has little effect on the warder it does block the creature’s sight allowing Happy the chance to engage the Norker which has chased Robb into the room.
Robb, much bloodied by his solo foray into the shrine area, makes it back to the safety of the teleport chamber and takes up a blocking position in the doorway to prevent Paldemar’s escape. Doc, distraught at the failure of his mighty electric powers which have yet to land a decisive blow, chases Paldemar down and tries to blast him with a raging whirlwind only to have it once again fail.
“Why have you forsaken me oh great God of Thunder”, he screams into the ether.
His only answer is a grunted snort and a flick of dismissal from the great God’s hand.
Sneezy has better luck with his fire blast further weakening Paldemar and as the evil mage tries to recover and flee Robb fits a dart into his lethal blowgun and delivers the killing blow into the side of the fiend’s neck.
With their master defeated the remaining Norkers soon fall and the warder is eventually worn down and the party is able to celebrate its victory through drink, song and the thorough ransacking of Paldemar’s belongings.
